Photo Mechanic - Star Rating

Photo Mechanic has transformed my photography workflow. It is now one of those applications that I just couldn't do without. I always use Photo Mechanic to ingest my images from memory cards and to do the initial sort whether it is wedding, commercial or press job. I do this cull or sort by looking at the individual images in the PM preview mode I then have my preferences set so that I can simply apply a star rating to each image just by hitting the number key for the rating I want to give the image. I also have PM set so that once I have rated an image it automatically steps to the next. This makes culling and sorting a very simple process. And let's face it we need to keep it as simple as possible! The star ratings then conveniently transfer into Lightroom - the next stage in my photography workflow.

I have been using this method for sometime but recently introduced another Windows machine to my workflow. I have spent ages trying to work out where to set single key star rating and auto move to next image.

Anyway to save me looking in the future this is where you do it.

Instagram again

I am talking about Instagram again. You may remember my last exploits with Instagram where I effectively managed to break my account by trying to use it as a photographer. Since then I have moved on a little. I will be quite honest with you, I didn't really get the whole Instagram thing. This was something the kids did on their smartphones - not something for me. As a professional wedding photographer why would I want to take inferior 'snaps' on my phone then share them publicly for the world to see?

Things changed when my son passed on his old iPhone to me when he upgraded. There is a stage in life where things change, it is a bit of a milestone. This is where the kids have suddenly grown up and they hand things down to you!

Instagram

So with my new toy I needed to find things to do with it so started using Instagram. I won't bore you with my previous experience you can read about it here if you are really procrastinating. I take pictures as my job, wedding pictures, portraits, fashion images and off course commercial work. I plan them, take them, edit them, deliver them, send out contracts, arrange releases, negotiate contracts. All of this goes with the photographer's job!

With my phone I take a picture, perhaps add a little filter, upload and move on. It is nothing like the day job it is a bit of fun and it is pretty much instant. Well it would be if my hashtag typing was a bit quicker and if I could see the little screen through my vari-focals.

I do see other professional photographers still effectively uploading their portfolio material or shots they have taken on a 'real' camera to Instagram but I think they are missing the fun and the charm of the application. There are loads of places for portfolio pictures and I don't think Instagram is one of them but each to their own.

I am a convert, I love it, on my morning walk in the beautiful Kent countryside with the dogs I am always on the look out for simple creative photo opportunities. The social aspect is cool too I see pictures from friends and colleagues from all over the world. Little instant snapshots of their lives - if you don't follow me already I am alanlangleyphoto

Wedding Photography Workflow - Part One

Wedding photography workflow - Part One

This is what I do, I am not saying that it is the best way, the right way or the only way. It is how I manage my digital workflow and is a process that has evolved over time. Everyone will have their own view but I thought I would just take a little time to explain what I do.

As wedding photographers we deal with high volumes of images and it is important that we have a process in place to manage those images from the camera memory card through to delivering to the customer.

My camera has dual card slots so on the day of the wedding I have duplicate copies of all RAW image files. As soon as I arrive home I need to get these files copied from the cards to my computer. To do this I now use a fantastic application called Photo Mechanic. When I started doing press work I quickly discovered that Lightroom was not good for captioning and quick filing so I started to use Photo Mechanic which is designed for this purpose however as soon as you start to use it you notice how incredibly quick it is and realise the benefit of using it for pretty much all work.

On my return home from a wedding I greet my lovely wife stroke the dogs and grab a well earned beer. I use Photo Mechanic to 'ingest' my files. This is PM talk for importing or copying the RAW files from the memory cards to the computer. PM has a stack of options that allow you to rename the files and also to copy the files to a back-up location. Personally I copy the files to the 'Working' folder of my computer, in a sub folder with the date (yyyymmdd) and then another subfolder labelled RAW. I also duplicate this on to an external drive which in turn is copied to another external drive.

Prior to stating the ingest process I update the PM IPTC stationery pad with details of the event which means that when I get round to exporting the JPGs they will have correct and relevant IPTC data, this includes captions, keywords, copyright status, and contact information. The IPTC stationery pad is a fantastic tool and it's use of variables makes the task a complete doddle. You will see that the Stationery Pad has a number of fields that you can enter relevant data information into and this data will remain with your images.

Once the images are safely ingested that is part one of my work flow complete. One thing here to note is that i keep the cards with the original RAW in a safe place until the images are processed.

Once all the files are ingested and backed up it is time to relax!

The next stage of my workflow normally takes place a couple of days later and this is the culling process. I will talk about this next time.  See Wedding Photography Workflow - Part Two

A Gilded Priory - Fashion Photography

A Spring Summer 2013 shoot on a freezing January day. My lasting memory from this day will always be just how cold it was - top marks to the team and especially our model Julia for keeping going. For the photographers amongst you I kept things very quick and simple. The majority of shots were taken with the 70-200 - it was essential for us to keep moving! Most of the images were lit with a single head with a beauty dish - although I also used a transluscent shower curtain for some of the images to recreate window light.

Many thanks to  all of the team and especially to Liz at St Augustine's Priory.

Emma and Daniel | Leeds Castle Wedding

Leeds Castle Wedding . A visit to Leeds Castle, Maiden's Tower for Emma and Daniel's beautiful wedding. Emma and Daniel travelled from Australia and the castle provided the setting for the perfect day. From a photographers perspective it doesn't get much better than this. The most memorable shot of the day was the night time group shot which really tested our lighting skills.
