Bob and Marley - Dog Photography Kent

I am a dog lover, I am therefore proud to introduce a new service - dog portraits. They will be like any other Dover Design shoot - the emphasis will be on creating the very best image of the subject. As you can see from the examples below we will use the latest studio techniques to create amazing images of your pets. These shoots need to be on location and somewhere that the dog feels at home. It also needs somewhere where you can control your dog - so not too many distractions!!

There are no time limits these shoots take as long as they take.

Have a plan - or not?

I recently arranged a fashion collaboration shoot - this is something we do once a month as a creative exercise. Everyone who gets involved commits 100% and we have lots of fun with the opportunity to try different things. On this particular shoot I worked out that we would have about two hours at the location and knew we were going for three different looks. I decided that I would go for three different lighting scenarios, dark, back-lit and blue.

On the day I worked through the scenarios and got some ok results similar to my visualisations. Having gone with a plan and completed it I should be happy but I am not! I think working to the plan actually stopped my creativity.

I suspect that if I had just turned up and gone with my instinct I would have got better results but obviously I can't prove it either way. At the start of the session there were some great natural light opportunities that I missed. The danger of not planning is that potentially you could dry up and not come up with any ideas but does over planning sap creativity?

My business is like a leaky plumbing system.

Like most wedding photographers I need to book a certain volume of weddings per year at a given price point in order to survive. To be honest I am pretty much there with any gaps being plugged with corporate bookings but I would like more weddings!! Wedding photography is what I like to do and where we excel. We spend a lot of time and effort in improving our photography techniques but in order to survive you need much more than excellent photography skills.

I tried a bit of casual analysis on our business workflow, it was only then I started to realise just how bad things actually are. Think of bookings as water entering my plumbing system. The first point of leakage is my website, you come to me to book your wedding and find me dribbling on about water leaks. I know this is a blog and if you have read this far so do you. What do others think - am I putting people off before they have even clicked the weddings tab?

I want people to book us because they like what they see - I also want people to be comfortable in their choice and to not be subjected to ninja sales tricks and up-selling cons.

So you make it through the website, god forbid you call me. I could be anywhere when that phone rings and if it is safe to do so I will answer and do my very best. You see, I am not answering from a sterile call centre environment, I will probably be walking the dogs, in Tesco or on another job. I am unlikely to be at my desk with my calendar in front of me. My next trick is to ask if you have seen my website, this effectively puts a barrier in the way of me fixing a meeting which really should be the next step. I have this in built mechanism that makes me want you to be sure I am right for you - I am the opposite of a salesperson. It would be like walking into a car showroom and the salesman saying, please take a brochure go home have a look at it and if you are sure you like the car cal me back!!

You will see that already I have leaked away some potentially good leads. I could also talk about my wedding fayre leaks ... every other photographer comes away with bookings, not me!! I think I get bored, this starts to show in my already grumpy looking face and I scare the punters away. I am considering a mask for the next fayre!! I am really not grumpy and if you do talk to me you will find that I am actually quite nice - I will chat to you about anything rather than selling you a wedding photography package.

I could go on and on but the bottom line is that if I managed my enquiries better I probably wouldn't need to do any more marketing. I wouldn't need to do that extra wedding fayre advertise in that magazine or pay to be on the preferred list. Does any of this apply to you? Where are your leaks ....

Martha Trust Fashion Show - Kent Photographers

I have been supporting Martha Trust fund raising events for some time. Last night I went along to their fashion show at St Georges Church Deal. The event was opened by Johnny Lewis from KMFM and George White - Martha Trust CEO. Four members of Barclays lent a hand along with the Martha team running a silent auction and helping out with refreshments. As an added bonus Barclays generously matches every penny its staff help to raise. A great job also by The White House and Suzanna from Make-Upps who between them did all of the hair and make-up. The volunteer models along with the team from Wardrobe Mistresses put on amazing cat walk show. After the show the audience had chance to buy the stock at greatly reduced prices ... and that is when I left :-)

Well done to Dee and Vicki - another fantastic event.

The Wedding reporter - Emma Woodhouse

I have been following Emma on Twitter for some time. I was intrigued when I first saw that she was a wedding reporter. I stumbled across her work when I was trying to decide if I should add any commentary to my wedding blog posts. Most photographers now blog weddings and some add text. The trouble is that generally photographers are not writers and the words can be a bit clumsy. '....From the first time I met xxxx and xxxx I knew we were going to have such fun. When xxxx arrived she looked radiant ... blah blah blah ...."

We have all seen the posts and I think the text can detract from the images - unless of course you are a writer!!

Emma,  the Wedding reporter provides a service where she attends your wedding, notebook in hand and produces a literary account of your day. The story can then be presented in a bespoke hard back book. Have a look at her website and read some of the examples and the feedback. A very talented lady offering a unique service that will stand the test of time.

Emma is based in Bristol but is happy to travel - if I was planning a wedding after booking the photographer I would find a way to have her on the guest list.
